A US jury has ordered hefty penalties amounting to billions of dollars in a legal dispute involving five brothers of Indian origin. According to Bloomberg's report, the case involves the five brothers and their significant real estate holdings in Los Angeles.

After a lengthy trial, one of the brothers, Haresh Jogani, has been ordered to pay more than $2.5 billion (approximately ₹20,072 crore) to his brothers as compensation. Additionally, he will also have to share his properties, which include around 17,000 apartments, valued at more than billions of US dollars.

According to Bloomberg's report, this decision stems from a 21-year-old land dispute, in which Haresh Jogani was ordered to pay ₹2,000 crore to his four brothers as compensation and to divide shares of their property empire in Southern California.

The case, which began in 2003, ultimately came to the jury to decide. Prior to this, the case went through 18 appeals in the Los Angeles Superior Court, involving multiple lawyers and five judges. Allegations in the case were that Haresh Jogani had violated a long-standing partnership with his brothers. Reports suggest that a hearing on punitive damages has also been scheduled for Monday, raising speculation that the current ₹2,000 crore penalty could increase further.
